Cancer, a disease of uncontrolled cell growth, is globally the second biggest killer after cardiovascular disorders. It is caused by both internal factors viz. inherited mutations, hormones, and immune conditions and by environmental/acquired factors viz. tobacco smoking, diet, radiation, and infections). Despite all cancers are a result of multiple mutations, these mutations are due to interactions with the environment. Many risk factors including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and air pollution and infections, have a profound influence on the cancer onset, development and progress. Early prognosis is very important to expect the probable onset, development and progress of cancer. Correct prognosis is also important to promote interventions to reduce the risk factors and to establish strategies for prevention and high chance for cure and treatment of cancer. This review aims to highlight the use of tumor biomarkers in the prognosis of different types of cancer and describes different approaches and strategies for the prevention and control of various types of cancers.
