Microbiology & Immunology Department

Vision

To make the department a leader at the local, regional, and global levels in the quality of teaching, learning, scientific research, and community service. Disseminating basic knowledge in microbiology, microbial genetics, immunology, parasitology, biotechnology, and microbial diseases and their treatment, thus contributing to the graduation of distinguished pharmacists and researchers to meet the needs of the local and regional labor market.

Strategic Goals

Goal 1: Providing high quality programs of undergraduate and postgraduate study. Although the laboratory and research facilities need to be improved, the department staff will work to enhance its facilities and efficiently utilize its available resources. New and innovative ideas will be sought to compensate for the shortage of facilities. For example, courses in bioinformatics and online learning can be tried beside the conventional wet labs.

Goal 2: Encouraging the basic and applied research and continuous development of the research quality to reach the international levels. More specifically, the department will aim to produce scientific research that be published in renowned and high impact factor journals. We will enhance the postgraduate students’ abilities to pursue their goals, by guiding them to develop some necessary skills such as critical reading and presentation of scientific articles, social scientific networking, and being globally aware life-long learners. The department staff members are encouraged to travel abroad to various universities worldwide to gain knowledge and experience.

Goal 3: Provide a local service by providing expertise in microbiological issues. The department aims to positively contribute to solving microbiology-related public problems such as combating infectious diseases and reducing the antibiotic resistance problems.

Message from the Head of Department

Welcome to the department’s website.

Microbiology is the science concerned with microscopic organisms (microbes) that are invisible to the naked eye. It is a relatively new science, as its emergence is linked to the discovery of the microscope. Microbiology is one of the most important and dangerous sciences that has had a profound impact on the evolution of the human race. Through this science, microbes have been harnessed in countless fields, including: combating human, animal, and plant diseases; increasing plant and animal production; using them as a direct source of food (such as single-cell proteins, mushrooms, and algae); fermentation industries (such as cheese and yogurt of various types, bread, alcohol production, etc.); and organic agriculture (Bio farming), which preserves public health and the environment and generates appropriate economic returns. This reliance (primarily) is based on microbial biotechnology, avoiding the use of chemicals, radiation, and radiation treatments, all of which are proven to be harmful. Organic products have become a global and national demand, and Egypt is currently implementing it to preserve public health and sustainable agricultural environmental development. The field of agricultural microbiology cannot be encompassed in this article due to its extreme diversity and rapid growth.

If education is one of the components of sustainable development and a fundamental guarantee of the security of nations, then the specialty of agricultural microbiology is one of the modern scientific educational specializations that responds to the necessary and promising applied needs at all levels.

The Department of Microbiology contributes to raising the efficiency of graduates through scientifically and technologically distinguished faculty members and the provision of advanced study methods that provide graduates with a high technical level capable of competing locally and regionally through effective community participation. This is achieved through graduate interaction with all parties and the diverse and ever-increasing fields of microbiology. This makes them more engaged and integrated internationally (and even locally) in both the workplace and scientific research and development fields. We are always pleased that our students are distinguished, successful, and in demand in the labor market and development. We also focus on qualifying our students by training them in self-learning methods, holding seminars, participating in conferences, and conducting scientific field visits. The Microbiology Department is a beacon for public lectures aimed at disseminating new developments and raising awareness of all that is new and important in the field of microbiology, such as holding seminars on widespread epidemic diseases, introducing bio nanotechnology, security and safety procedures, mushroom production, and the dangers of contaminated water. Furthermore, we are committed to conducting scientific field visits in all areas related to the specialty.
