Message from the Head of Department

The faculty and staff of the Department of Pharmacognosy welcome you to visit the department’s website, which serves as a step towards communicating with those seeking information about the department. We hope you find the information you seek on these pages about the department, its vision, mission, courses offered, and research activities.

Pharmacology is one of the basic sciences of pharmacy, upon which other sciences have been based for the manufacture of drugs. Since the early decades of the 20th century, these sciences have relied heavily on natural resources to discover new drugs. Significant progress in various aspects of basic pharmacy sciences, including natural product science, and the community’s interest in this field have led to the need to graduate students equipped with the knowledge and skills in this specialization.

In line with the College of Pharmacy’s general policy of excellence in teaching and scientific research, the Department of Pharmacognosy continually strives to develop its curriculum to achieve the goals of the college in general and the department in particular, keeping pace with developments in this field. Since its establishment, the department has strived to create an appropriate educational and research environment for its students, as well as a collaborative research environment among its members. This is achieved by supporting and providing opportunities for collaboration in the scientific research process with various departments and colleges. This enables members to benefit from each other’s expertise, keep up with developments in scientific research in the field, and participate in its development.

The department offers several courses at various levels of study (listed in the department’s curriculum) in the Bachelor’s degree program for the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program. The department also collaborates with other departments in the master’s program.

The department includes a select group of faculty members with professional and academic experience, who contribute to serving the university and the research community. Their research interests range from developing drug discovery from natural sources to evidence-based herbal medicine practices.

The department aspires to continue raising the level of academic education and its outcomes to meet the demands of the labor market and to contribute to achieving the vision of the college and university by supporting its faculty members and administrators. In conclusion, I cannot but remind you that this role played by the Department of Pharmacology would not have been achieved without the grace of God Almighty, then the university administration, and the Deanship of the College of Pharmacy for their continuous support. To them we owe all thanks and appreciation.
